Laser Hair Removal at Divine Med Spa in Singapore

by Paul on September 25, 2009

Eyebrow004Laser Hair Removal always seemed like a frivolous expense, reserved only for those in the upper tax bracket… that is until I moved to Asia. Here a full set of LHR treatments cost about as much as getting a pair of glasses, and if things go correctly it’ll last you much longer.

This isn’t a shocking confession, but it is kind of personal – I’ve shaved my eyebrows since I was about 11 or 12. If I didn’t do it, I’d be a neanderthal. The Cypert family brows are dark, thick and distinct. Maybe at one point in history this was a respectable physical trait (or maybe uni-brow folks were always creepy guys on the fringe), but uni-brows are certainly not fashionable these days. Particularly in Asia, where everyone says what’s on their minds in very public settings – “oh you look fat today” or “do you shave your eyebrows, you should rearry wax them because I can totary see the stubre”. After about the 10th time where someone pointed out my eyebrow situation to me, I started looking into treatments.

My new friend, Christine, at Divine MedSpa talked me through the timings, procedures and pricing. The price is different based on the size of area, thickness of hair, etc. Thankfully my eyebrow area is small and the hair is thick and dark, so removal is relatively easy and pain free.

I let my eyebrows grow out for about a week and took a pre-session picture (see above). The day before the procedure I was instructed to shave the area in the shape I’d like to have and that’s about it. I was very nervous the day of, which in retrospect was silly… I’ve sat for over 20 hours total on one tattoo. But the not knowing what kind of pain the Laser (actually IPL which is a light pulse and not really a laser) would cause was building up in my mind. I worried about my ability to stay still and let them finish the procedure.

The actual procedure took all of about 5 seconds. They had me lay down, put some kind of jelly or wax around the area, and two short zaps and I was done. To be honest, I didn’t even have time to register what was happening. Granted this is a small area and so doing an entire leg would give you more time to experience the sensation… but I found it completely manageable.

So far I’ve only had the one session, but am going back for round number two in a couple weeks… but I’ve only had to shave once. The hair is already thinning out quite a bit, is slow to grow, and not as obvious as it was before. In the grand scheme of life I suppose one could make an argument that such procedures are superfluous… but over here it’s affordable, quick, and once you’re done you don’t have to think about it anymore. If I factor in all the time in my life I spent dealing with or concerned with this area, it more than makes up the value for me. I can imagine it’s an even greater benefit to women who have their armpits or other areas done.

I’m a big fan of the procedure and would recommend it to anyone living in Asia. I don’t think it’s feasible to do if you’re traveling short term as you will need multiple sessions and they need to be spaced out around 6-weeks from each other. For anyone in Singapore who’s interested in starting a session contact Christine at Divine Med Spa and tell her you’re coming from us or contact us and we’ll work something out for you. They even have a new procedure for fair hair (but be warned I’ve been told this one is pretty painful, but finally an option for those with blonde hairs).
