Great article, great pictures. I'm vegetarian but I also travel a lot, so my rule is I eat as the locals eat. I've been to Japan a few times, and tried real sushi and sashimi for the first time, and was just amazing. Never thought I'd like it, but you'd have to stab me with a fork to get the last piece out of my chopsticks. The flavours and the textures...it tastes like a beautiful sea. I wasn't hugely brave (I was offered Fugu, but declined) as if you don't really eat fish much, you'd be surprised by how 'fishy' fish can taste.

I really like the Japanese attitude to eating...big bowls, small plates, lots of courses and a little of everything. I also like that they demand good food at reasonable prices. I had lunch in Nagoya, and had vegetable tempura, miso soup, pickled vegetables and rice, with sweet barley tea. Total cost? About £5.

And there's nothing wrong with beer vending machines either! 100 yen for a can of Kirin? Sign me up.

I must have seriously missed out a lot for not taking the time to go to Tsukiji to try out the freshest sushi when I lived in Tokyo. I'm going to make sure and head straight to Daiwa on my next trip to Tokyo. Thanks.
