A well-priced day spa in the heart of Sukhumvit
In Bangkok massage spas / salons are like 7 Eleven convenience stores….there’s one (or five) on every street and the offerings are typically inexpensive and fairly consistent. Now of course I am speaking about “proper” massage spas…I personally have a rule about spas in Bangkok – if there is the bevy of lovely ladies standing outside selling the services, I usually keep walking as these are more….ahem…dedicated to “special” male services. If it is a dignified exterior without flashing signs or ladies, then 9 times out of 10 it is a legitimate massage spa.

Living in Bangkok, everyone has their favourite…usually in their neighbourhood. When I lived on Sukhumvit Soi 16, my favourite was Palm Massage on Sukhumvit Soi 16. Their 60 minute Thai massage for 250THB ($7 USD / $10.50 SGD) is about the same price as most massages in Bangkok but felt like a real bargain considering the cute little Thai house with koi ponds and private rooms. In Thailand, massages can range from 200THB – 3000THB and this is usually a factor of the location and the luxuriousness of the setting.

So I was in fact surprised when my friend Gretchen introduced me to Lavana on Sukhumvit Soi 12 – a spa with luxurious environs and surprisingly reasonable prices given the high-end, cushy private rooms (no flimsy curtain dividers here!) with private showers and truly skilled masseuses. I enjoyed the 60 minute Oil Massage for 700THB ($20.50 USD / $29.50 SGD). Not only was the massage divine…I was pampered with small touches like heated pillows and the most comfy cushioned tables – I really struggled not to fall asleep.  These are the kinds of touches one only usually sees in high-end 4-star hotel spas where the massages are 5-10x the price.

Thai massage is 450THB ($13 USD / $19.50 SGD)for 60 minutes and other services like 4-hand Oil Massage, Aroma Oil Massage, Foot Massage, Facials and more are also available.

And the best part – no appointment required and they are open 9am – 2am! Lavana is top on my list to return to when next in Bangkok. In fact I already have a perfect day in my mind…my favourite brunch at Crepes and Co, also on Sukhumvit Soi 12, followed by a massage at Lavana – maybe I will spring for 90 minutes next time
